Me and The Reining Queen of Pole Dance, Felix Cane

I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the California Pole Dance Champion competition back in October ‘09, but got so busy with the production of my own show here in the Bay Area, Cosmopolelitan, that I couldn’t get around to writing about it until now. At CPDC I was truly amazed and thoroughly entertained by some of the most athletic, attractive, and artistically gifted women of pole dancing around…California’s Got Talent! Angel Dust, the show’s producer, “Brought It” not only with the selection of finalists, but also by bringing the Queen of Pole herself, Felix Cane. Felix put on a brilliant performance that night and also taught a few workshops before the show ( I was one of the lucky ones who snagged a spot in class).

The top three finalists: 1st place went to the phenomenal trixter, Amber Kittle, 2nd place went to the unique moves and graceful transitions of Laura Martin, and 3rd place to Noelle Wood, formerly of the Bay Area.

I melt over smooth transitions when I am watching pole dancing, like music, it’s the silence in between that breathes life into the dance, so when I saw Laura Martin after watching at least 15 of the 20 performers that night I knew who would be taking first place…well…close. Laura came in 2nd, but for me she is the winner.

Though all of the performers were remarkable, there were a couple of other women in the show who also stood out for me though I don’t know how they placed. Blue, who also works as an entertainer at Jumbo’s Clown Room and is a performer with Tricky Vixens, and Lisa Wilhoit of Be Spun Studio in LA. Blue is a fabulous dancer, trixter, and entertainer. Lisa has a soft, youthful and effortless quality to her dancing incorporating beautiful lines and graceful transitions. I think she is someone to watch and who shall be reckoned with for the future.

Pole Dancers for Pets:

We pole dancers are raising money for all of the lovable homeless critters over at the SPCA. On December 12th 2009 we will be performing COSMOPOLELITAN an evening of dinner and vertical dance at Angelica’s Bistro in Redwood City, CA. This show will be a display of the athleticism and artistry of pole dancing, no tipping no stripping, with guest belly dancing performances and Music by The Boys. All of our admission sales will be donated to a wonderful cause and organization. Please come out and show your support for the animals and your local vertical dance performers.

For month of September Pole La Teaze has a class for everyone; for the commitment shy, you can now just drop into classes on Saturdays (SF) and Thursdays (RWC)! Below you will find a list of classes for the coming months. Please feel free to contact me either by phone or email with any questions about classes. For October we are working on a class for floor show choreography, if you’re interested in a class like this please send us an email with your thoughts regarding workable times for you.

Noelle Wood has over 13 years of classical dance training and has received pole dancing instruction from various studios in the San Francisco Bay Area and privately from Jenyne Butterfly of Las Vegas, NV, Pantera of Seattle, WA and KT Coates of Vertical Dance in the UK. She has been teaching pole dancing to all ages and abilities for three years and is a certified pilates instructor who has been teaching for 9 years.

Pole dancing studio “immoral”

So I got a pretty good laugh from this article at Red Orbit about a town’s outrage of Elona Gano’s (I believe, former Pole Addiction instructor) new pole dance studio. “It is immoral”, says one resident.

I sooo cannot relate to this puritan attitude held by many when it comes to pole dancing for fitness. I personally say F@*k em and go about my business blessing the floor with my presence and wrapping my vice like thighs around a 10ft pole… I am getting the best workout in the world, ever! Having worked as a dancer in the industry I can assure you that most, not all, exotic dancers are doing little but using the pole to keep on balance of those 8 in. stilettos while they wag their assets at some prospective patron. So without my own rant, I’ll say, “live and let live”, even though I don’t really appreciate being forced to listen to Scientology rhetoric as I leave the Bart Station or particularly enjoy watching some naked stranger riding a bike down 3^rd Street during WNBR

Felix Cane Is Miss Pole Dance World

I you’re a pole freak you’ve probably already heard that Felix Cane walked away with the Miss Pole Dance World 2009 title on April 25^th. This year’s competition, held in Jamaica at Hedonism III, brought pole divas from all over the world including, “super hero/action figure” girl, Pantera who won the title of “Best Pole Tricks”. Runners-up from the competition are US Pole Dance 2009 winner Jenyne Butterfly Ball (1^st runner up) and Miss Pole Dance UK 2008 winner Alesia (2^nd runner up). Although Felix’s choice for music really didn’t appeal to me (though I love Guns and Roses), I felt that it was the best musical interpretation in a performance that I have ever seen from her. If you’ve seen video clips of her from Miss pole dance Australia 2006 and 2008 you just can’t miss how much she has improved or that it was even possible to improve (she was just so amazing from the start). This video of Ms. Cane from her winning performance at Hedonism (gotta love the name) should inspire you to get your booty up that pole, if it doesn’t nothing will: Miss Pole Dance World 2009.

I am absolutely star struck over Felix Cane, Miss Pole Dance Australia ’08; good god, how can any of us ever live up to that girl? Well, of course, we can’t being but mere mortals, so we’ll just have to thank the higher one for sending us such a gorgeous sylph to admire. Upcoming Classes

In May I’ll be offering another Celestial Virgins (Level I) class from 5-6:30 pm on Saturdays. This series starts on May 2^nd and runs to May 23^rd.

The Level I class is packed with pole spins, climbing and culminates with learning a basic inversion. It’s a lot of pole for the price and will definitely jump-start your pole skills. You can sign up online by making a deposit at http://polelateaze.com/

I am looking at a new studio space where I will be doing the next intermediate series. The place is a trip down memory lane for me as I trained on a dance scholarship in the 90’s in Jazz, tap, and hip hop there. This space is fabulous for multiple poles but has limited available times. I am looking at Wed. and Fri. at 8:00pm and Sundays 10am to noon let me know what interests you.

You Tube is a great place to check out what’s going on with the pole dance skills of the world. Sometimes you’re just absolutely blown away by what some of these gals can do. Since I posted my last You Tube video I have conversed with some of the “heavy hitters”, as well as, some of the beginners that just seem to have a knack and true passion for the art. My favorite at present goes by the user name of Redke71; she is fiery, sexy, athletic, and generous with her knowledge of pole dancing. If you visit her channel check out a variety of her postings and see them to the end. The girl’s got skills! I was gonna embed her link, but it’s disabled. Oh well, hope this other one will do. I warn you I almost started crying watching this, it’s so beautiful.

Ballerina aka Princess

Why? …Because it’s your foundation position to more advanced moves such as bow and arrow, plus, it feels and looks good.

Stand with the pole on your strong-arm side. With your strong arm holding the pole above your head and your other hand across your body holding on to the pole at

chest level, hook the pole with your inside leg on the inside of your knee. Falling out and around, bring your outside leg up to meet your inside leg. Pull in slightly with the hooked leg to speed your momentum
